Organic Coffee Review: Machu Picchu (Peru)

I picked up a bag of organic coffee beans from Machu Picchu, Peru from the Cedele branch at One Raffles Quay.

The enclosing bag is a nice, two-tone green. However, it will not protect the contents from moisture and air once it is opened. An air tight container is highly recommended to slow the reaction of the beans with air.

The roasting grade of the beans tends towards the dark roast, somewhere between a "city" and a "full city" on the scale below (third and fourth bean from the right). I'm not a big fan of the really dark roasts (French and Italian) as the aromatic oils exuded by the bean would have been chased away and replaced by unnecessary smoky and charred odors.

I grind my own coffee so I setup a handful of beans for plunger extraction. The source, Cafe Direct, notes the single source origin selection to possess a "nutty flavour" and "dark chocolate" overtones. My one cup did release the "nutty" aspect of it, but I could not detect the hint of cocoa (I'll probably experiment with a shorter and/or longer extraction to see if that works -- I was using the standard four minutes). I drink espressos on a daily basis, so the java generated as a result of the gentler extraction was a little more mellow for my preference.

Interim verdict: 3.5 / 5

All that Glitters

My close friends, Darren and Sharon Tan, have designed and put together these marvelous pieces of costume jewelry. I was honored to be able to do a product shoot for two of their best pieces.
